Another adventure travel-inspired WordPress blog? Sort of. Here’s why. In late 2014 and at the age of 30, I left a very good university research job to make a change to working as a climbing instructor and mountain guide. Call it a quarter-life (or third-life?) crisis.

As an Englishman living in Scotland, I have a lot of time for the Scottish mountains and have been working towards outdoor qualifications. I’ve spent a lot of time reading lines on maps. But before trying to make it in the outdoor industry, I decided to take some time out and do six months of  travelling in Nepal, South East Asia and New Zealand.

So that’s why I originally started this blog. I was interested in finding out, and sharing what I found out, from writing for ukclimbing.com in Thailand to 22-hour mountain days in New Zealand.

But that was back in mid-2015. Now, in 2016, a lot has happened. I’ve made the change and I’m a guide, climbing instructor, and overseas expedition leader – though I’ve still kept some research work to make ends meet.

Linesonthemap today is my site as a working guide, climbing instructor and expedition leader. But it’s also still somewhere I can share my personal climbing, mountaineering and travel adventures.
